If you are one of the many people chained to a desk everyday, it is difficult to stay fit. The hours of limited movement and sitting can do that to you. On a personal note, from the time I started an office job some 15 years ago, I almost doubled my weight. This led me to look for a new routine to not only lose weight, but also stay fit, even if you work a desk job. Here are 4 easy ways to help you keep the pounds off while at work.
Try to walk as much as you can throughout your day. If it is possible to walk to work, that would be great exercise. If you bring a car, park further so you have some extra steps. Use the stairs more and avoid elevators and escalators. These may seem like small changes, but they do make a difference.
Move around and exercise
Need to talk to a colleague? Walk to their desk instead of phoning them. It also helps you as we tend to communicate better when we do it face-to-face. Move around the office every 2 hours or so to stretch your legs. It also helps stimulate you more as opposed to being lethargic and sitting all day.
You can do some stretching from your desk as well. Or better yet, you can do simple workouts even while you work. Try squeezing the muscles in your core region. Keep them flexed for a minute and release. Do this everyday for a few minutes. Of course a full workout before or after work would be best. Working out your back and core even helps your posture and makes sitting less painful.
Watch your snacking and eat right
Always start the day with a healthy breakfast. Skipping breakfast tends to make you binge during lunch. You also crave for more fatty food since you are deprived of food. If you are always rushing to work, keep a box of cereal or instant oatmeal at your desk and eat while working.
Avoid snacking when you are just sitting at the desk. If you want to snack, avoid the potato chips and sugary drinks. Stick to fruits and other healthier options. Eat more fresh fruits than dried as dried fruits have loads more sugar.
Keep yourself hydrated
Drink lots of water. 8 – 10 glasses a day is ideal. It is common to forget to drink water when you are busy working all day. Be conscious to drink water. This helps promote overall health, and can even aid in losing weight.
