Knowing the Limits to Your Workers Compensation Insurance

​Workers' compensation policy is meant to protect the workforce of a business. Businesses must have this kind of insurance to give aid to those who will be met with an accident while on the job. But it is not an excuse for employers not to do their job in maintaining a safe workplace.  
Two Parts of A Worker Compensation Policy
Part one includes medical, rehabilitation expenses, and salary lost due to physical disability or general inability to work. In the case of death, it also pays out to the beneficiaries of the deceased. Benefits can have no limits, and claims are uncontestable and undeniable unless there is evidence that fraud occurred. 

The second part is about the liability of the employer. If the employer's negligence causes injury or death to the employee, they may be sued. They will be obliged under law to pay additional fines for damages caused aside from paying the compensation benefits. This part of the policy has certain limits unlike the first part

What is Not Included in A Worker Compensation Policy?
This policy, like many others, also has its limitations. These are set to prevent employers from being taken advantage of since they are paying for their premiums. Here are the instances that your policy won't cover:
  1. Injuries that Happened Outside
    Once an incident happens, the moment you step out of the job site, that will not be covered anymore. But if you are authorized to work from home, any accident that would happen will be covered. The coverage will still apply even outside your standard working hours.

  2. Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol
    Alcohol and drugs such as marijuana and cocaine are known to impair motor skills. So if you file a claim for an incident that happened while you are under the influence of these substances, it will be denied!

  3. Hurting Yourself
    Knowing that you can get a significant amount out of your benefits, it might push you to hurt yourself deliberately. Therefore, self-inflicted injuries will not be covered. 

  4. Disobeying Safety Guidelines
    In case of an accident and the worker did not comply with the safety guidelines, then that person will be ineligible. 

  5. Horseplay 
    When employees fight over something that isn't work-related and gets injured, they won't be eligible for the worker's compensation benefits. However, if there is a person who is not directly involved, he/she is still covered. An example of this is the person who breaks up the fight.
