What Works At Work

​Outside of your pay, what makes you stay at work?  Why would you choose to stay where you are against going somewhere else?  What makes you say that you are happy where you are?  If you are not satisfied or content with work, what are you looking for?  As workers, we can do the best we can if we are placed in a suitable environment.  We become loyal when we are taken care of.  So the question is, what makes us content with where we are working?

​Working Environment
What makes a great working environment?  How do you want to be treated at work that makes you pleased?  From my experience, it boils down to 2 things.  These is accountability and autonomy.

Accountability does not only mean it is your neck on the line.  It also says you are trusted.  You are trusted to do your part.  It also means what you are doing has a purpose, and it matters.  We realize we are a crucial cog in the company's system.  We see and feel a sense of fulfillment from it.

Autonomy does not mean we are left alone to fend for ourselves.  It does not say we are alone.  Guidance and mentorship are always essential.  However, it is the freedom to choose how we work in a way that suits us.  We are given the flexibility with our work hours, approach, and timelines.  

The Doors Are Always Open
There is a free flow of ideas from both ends.  As much as we take advice from our leaders, we want them to listen to us too.  
We want our ideas to be heard and considered.  We want our leaders to be approachable and accommodating.  In the same way, we want to be aware.  We want a transparent environment where everyone is honest and truthful.  

Proper communication is essential in maintaining this.  The right channels should be in place.  The constant and regular dialogue between yourself and others is vital.  

The Little Things Matter
Sometimes it is the little things where we realize how good we have it.  It is the attention to these small details which makes us see that we are cared for.  It makes us know that they listen to our needs, and they make an effort.
